Mermaid Tales – A sea of story ( Originally published as audio cassette by New Frontier, 2002)
Of all the magical creatures that inhabit the sea, mermaids are perhaps the best known and loved. Tales and images of mermaids can be traced through out the world and date as far back as antiquity. Classically mermaids are described as beautiful young maidens who are half woman and half fish. They are often sighted sitting upon rocks with a comb and mirror in their hand, singing with the voices of angels. Many superstitions surround these mer maidens. Sailors in particular believed it was unlucky to see a mermaid and marriages between the sea folk and humans, seldom have happy endings. Mermaids are powerful and wilful creatures. However, there are tales that tell of their generosity. For acts of kindness shown to them, their memories are as long as the ocean is deep. So find your ‘tail’ and dive into the sea of story!
1. Jack and the Seawitch (Scottish traveller tale shared by Duncan Williamson)
2. The Mermaids Treasure (Shared with me by American storyteller Diane Ferlatte)
3. The Mermaid and the Shoe Maker (Traditional Breton)
4. Shell Woman (Traditional Chinese)
