Why should you join Batt on the mat?
Batt on the Mat is in part a response to the post covid world we find ourselves living, where opportunities for professional development have been restricted. The membership structure of Batt on the Mat give educators an opportunity to be part of an ongoing community beyond one-off professional development. It give access to the distillation of Tanya’s thirty years of experience as an arts educator, storyteller and professional development provider, where she has learnt that continuity counts.
“At the heart of human development and learning is relationship, or whakawhanaungatanga. That connection can be particularly nourishing when it continues over an extended period of time. In my years of offering professional development, I’ve found that teachers develop confidence in their integration of arts into the learning environment when they are supported by their colleagues and a wider community who share their kaupapa/intention. One-off workshops may be inspiring but opportunities that offer ongoing support are more likely to ensure long term confidence and commitment to using arts based education.”
“The arts are not a subject, they are a fundamental human experience that mediate exploration and expression of meaning. World mythologies tell us our earth was sung into being, it was danced into being, it was imagined and then given form. Arts are the way of the heART and they are familiar and engaging ‘friends’ of children/tamariki.”
